Jane Dodds has called on the Government to act quickly to reform the welfare system following a new report showing there are more Foodbanks than McDonald's in the UK.
A new report from the Trussell Trust shows that there are now more than 2,000 Foodbanks across the UK, compared to 1,249 McDonald's branches.
Previous reports from the Trussell Trust have shown that the waiting time for Universal Credit payments is a key contributor to the usage of foodbanks, with thousands of children also relying upon food parcels.
Jane Dodds said:
"The fact that there are more Foodbanks than McDonald’s in the UK should be a real wake up call for everyone of just how broken our benefits system truly is.
"No one should be forced to rely upon foodbanks simply to get by and the fact that thousands of families, including children, have no choice but to do so is a damning indictment of the current state of our country.
"The Government need to act swiftly to fix our broken benefits system. They should start by abolishing the 5 week waiting period for Universal Credit payments and ensure we have a system which genuinely supports the most vulnerable in our society."
