The Liberal Democrats have warned that people in Brecon & Radnorshire "will not forget" the actions of Tory MP Fay Jones, who last week voted against providing safe and legal routes to sanctuary for vulnerable refugees.

Last week [04/11/2020] Conservative MPs rejected amendments to the Immigration Bill aimed at supporting safe and legal avenues for refugees to come to the UK, despite four people, including children, tragically losing their lives trying to cross the Channel just a week earlier.

This is the third time Fay Jones has voted against these measures.

The Liberal Democrats, who are also urging the public to back their petition, have committed to fight on and stand up for the rights of refugees.

In addition to fighting for safe and legal routes to sanctuary, the Party wants to maintain the rights for refugees in Europe to be reunited with their families and ensure that unaccompanied child refugees can be resettled in the UK.

Jane Dodds, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader & former MP for Brecon & Radnorshire, said:

“Providing safe and legal routes for refugees is the right thing to do. Not just because these are vulnerable people who deserve our help, but because it’s the best way to tackle criminal smugglers and stop people attempting dangerous Channel crossings.

“However, instead of taking this humane and moral step, the Conservative Government has decided to double down on their dangerous anti-refugee rhetoric.

"Sending more Royal Navy vessels to the Channel might make Priti Patel feel good, but it will not make this problem go away.

“By failing to guarantee and strengthen the legal routes available to refugees and asylum seekers this Conservative Government is neglecting our moral duty to help those in need and is leaving vulnerable people to die or fall victim to criminal gangs.

“How Fay Jones can look at herself in the mirror knowing that she rejected proposals to ensure that unaccompanied child refugees can be resettled in the UK is beyond me. People will not forget her actions.”

Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael added:

"Just last week, yet more people tragically lost their lives trying to cross the Channel. It is utterly heartbreaking, especially for the friends and families left behind.

"It’s hard to imagine how desperate people must be to climb into these boats in search of a better life. It just isn't right that vulnerable people are left no choice but to make these perilous attempts.”
