Jane calls Government threats to deport EU citizens appalling

A sign pointing to passport control, with people climbing a flight of stairs in the background.

Responding to comments by Brandon Lewis that EU citizens living in the UK could face deportation, Jane Dodds, Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire, has said:

"I am appalled by Brandon Lewis’ comments today.

"EU citizens living in this country were guaranteed that, no matter what happened with Brexit, they would be able to continue living and working in the place they now call home.

EU citizens are our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues...

"There are thousands of EU citizens who have chosen to build their lives in Wales. They are now being told unless they are granted Settled Status by the Home Office by December 2020 they will effectively be left undocumented and facing deportation.

"That is totally unacceptable. EU citizens are our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues and they deserve better than to be treated like this.

"That’s why the Liberal Democrats are fighting to secure the rights of EU citizens as they were promised they would be.

"The consequences of getting this wrong are nothing short of another Windrush-style scandal, a horror we should never allow to happen again.”
