Commenting on the news that Powys County Council is proposing to move ahead with the closure of Llanbedr Church in Wales School Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd Member Jane Dodds has called the move “shameful”.
Jane Dodds MS with Cllr William Powell and Cllr John Morris
Commenting on the developments Dodds stated: “The decision by the Independent and Conservative-run council to move forward with the closure plans for Llanbedr Church in Wales School is deeply shameful.
“This school is at the heart of a thriving community and the decision by the Conservatives and Independents to move forward with its closure demonstrates they simply do not care about the survival of rural communities.
“I have still yet to hear a valid justification for moving forward with this closure, with Cllr Phyl Davies stating to me over an email that ‘nobody in a role within the council is saying that small schools cannot deliver the new curriculum or even implying that’.
“Powys Liberal Democrats will continue to fight against the closure of Llanbedr and are calling for a halt to all rural school closures in Powys. What the Independents and Conservatives need to understand is that by removing schools from rural communities, they are likely to be contributing a devastating hammer blow to the long-term survival of these villages.
“I urge all residents to make their voices heard in the consultation period that is now open until December 16. I and Powys Liberal Democrats’ County Councillors will continue to use our positions and voices to oppose these plans.
